Keep your pet safe all summer long with these valuable tips.
Start your summer off on the right paw with pet insurance from Nationwide®.
Summer is arriving at last! Here are some tips to prep your pet for the sunnier days to come.
Pet safety reminders for summertime fun
- 43% of all the claims we receive for snake bites are submitted in the summer months.1 Keep your pet leashed and be mindful of what snakes might be in your area and where they like to hide, including areas with tall grasses, under rock piles or other debris and near water.
- Pet allergy claims also spike in the summer months. If left untreated, seasonal allergies can exacerbate conditions like asthma. Talk to your veterinarian if you notice excessive itching, skin irritation, difficulty breathing, wheezing or coughing.
- Keep your pet cool when the mercury rises. Exercise during the cooler morning and evening hours, and make sure your pet always has access to fresh water and a cool place to rest.
For pets travelling with you on summertime adventures, here are some travel tips:
- Pets should always be secured in the car with a restraint (crate, carrier or car seat) for safety.
- Be aware of local health hazards at your destination, including wildlife and environmental toxins.
- Ensure your pet is vaccinated against any transmissible diseases and up to date on their preventives.
- Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle no matter how temperate it may seem!
Be ready when the 4th of July fireworks start
The most fur-ightful day of the year for many pets isn’t Halloween, it’s the 4th of July. Our pets’ ears are sensitive, which means loud noises—including fireworks, thunderstorms, trash trucks and even the vacuum cleaner—can cause some pets intense alarm and stress.
If your pet shows these signs when loud sounds occur, they may have noise phobia:
- Shaking, cowering or hiding
- Restlessness
- Destructiveness
- Panting or vocalizing more than usual
- Refusal to go outside
